Styggekrumpen is one of the older and better restaurants in Aalborg, although I don’t know how long it has actually existed.
In any case, my last visit here was my second visit to the restaurant part (half of the room is a café, and in my experience one of the best ones in town). My first visit was in late 2005 or early 2006, and I remember it as being one of the better meals to be found in Aalborg. This recent visit confirmed that. Back then I found this place quite expensive, but nowadays it seems more reasonable, especially when you consider the food.
I am writing this review eight months later, so it’s not the most accurate run down.
We chose a three course set menu for 348 kroner (€47), but they also offer a la carte dishes.
Before the three course meal we were served a small snack in the form of a bun stuffed with a sea food salad.
The first course was lemon sole in a Jerusalem artichoke soup with water cress and crispy rye bread crumble.
The main course was sirloin of beef with a pepper sauce, a potato gratin (probably with rosemary), cauliflower and a burnt leek, which as being a tad chewy. My slab of meat was in places very tender, in places a bit chewy, although it was nicely pink cooked. My three companions had no complaints though.
The dessert was baileys ice cream, burnt marzipan, chocolate cream, pickled pineapple, and popcorn nougatine. Quite a lovely dessert and better than what I’ve had in certain very expensive restaurants.
Overall, a very pleasant meal, and all four of us were quite happy. While it wasn’t perfect it may well overall have been the best meal I’ve had in Aalborg when you take the price into consideration. The meal at Mortens Kro had dishes and elements that surpassed Styggekrumpen, but overall I find Styggekrumpen to offer better value. The food here was not rocket science – just good, classic, enjoyable food.
The service was also good, and one small thing I noticed was how the waiter turned the bottle of wine, so the label was visible to the guest he poured to. I remember the waiter as being friendly, forthcoming and humorous, and the pace of the meal was also good. That also means that the service and the pace of the meal was better than Mortens Kro.

Styggekrumpen er en af de ældre og bedre restauranter I Aalborg, men jeg ved ikke, hvor længe den faktisk har eksisteret.
Uanset hvad var mit sidste besøg mit andet besøg på restaurantdelen (halvdelen af stedet er en café, og efter min mening en af byens bedste). Jeg var her første gang sidst i 2005 eller først i 2006, og jeg husker det som et af de bedste måltider, jeg har fået i Aalborg. Det sidste besøg bekræftede det. I sin tid så jeg Styggekrumpen som et ret pebret sted, men nu til dags ser jeg prisen som rimelig – især når man tager kvaliteten af maden i betragtning.
Jeg skriver anmeldelsen her otte måneder efter besøget, så det er ikke den mest præcise gennemgang.

Inden de tre retter fik vi en lille snack i form af en lille bolle fyldt med en skaldyrssalat.
Forretten var rødtunge i en jordskokkesuppe med brøndkarse og sprødt rugbrødsdrys.
Hovedretten var oksemørbrad med pebersauce, en kartoffelkage (nok med rosmarin), blomkål og en brændt porrer, som var lidt sej. Mit stykke kød var visse steder meget mørt, mens det andre steder var lidt sejt, men det var dog stegt flot rosa. Mine medspisere beklagede sig dog ikke.
Desserten var Bailey’s-is, brændt marcipan, chokoladecreme, syltet ananas og popcornnougatine. Faktisk en ret dejlig dessert, som var bedre, end hvad jeg har fået på visse meget dyre restauranter.
Alt i alt et dejligt måltid, og vi var alle fire tilfredse. Selvom det ikke var et perfekt måltid, var det nok trods alt det bedste måltid, jeg har fået i Aalborg – især når man også kigger på prisen. Mortens Kro havde retter og elementer, som var bedre end Styggekrumpen, men man fik mere for pengene på Styggekrumpen. Maden her var ikke super opfindsomt, men blot god velsmagende klassisk fransk madlavning.
Betjeningen var også god, og en lille detalje, jeg bemærkede, var, at tjeneren drejede vinflasken, så gæsten, han skænkede op for, kunne se etiketten. Jeg husker tjeneren som værende rar, imødekommende og humoristisk, og måltidets hastighed fungerede også fint. Det betyder også, at betjeningen og hastigheden var bedre end på Mortens Kro.
